| Baby girl and mother doing just fine at delivery at Nanuet home.
Lt. Bernadette Frae of Rockland Paramedics has seen a lot of babies born over her 18-year career.
She's been to homes in time to help rush expectant moms to a hospital just in time to give birth. And she's arrived at homes just after a baby had been born. Tuesday was the first time she's ever had the opportunity to help a woman actually give birth at home.
Frae, along with paramedic Walter Dusseldorp and volunteers Erich Rechenberger Sr. and John Reilly from the Nanuet Ambulance Corps, helped a 33-year-old Nanuet woman give birth at 6:24 a.m. Friday at a home on Keltz Street in Nanuet. Mom and the baby, a girl, are doing just fine.
Frae said the woman had been to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern a few hours earlier, but came home because it did not appear she was ready to give birth. However, Frae said the woman's contractions kicked in again and it turned out this time she was ready to give birth.
"Usually we take the women to the hospital," said Frae, noting that this time the mother of two knew that it was time for her third child to enter the world. "I told her to push and the baby came out smiling and crying."
The mother and baby were both taken to Good Samaritan Hospital as a precaution.
Frae noted that with her paramedic partner and the two ambulance volunteers — both retired police officers — everything went smoothly in helping the mom give birth. |
