History

The idea to create the Nanuet Community Ambulance Youth Corps was first developed by John McDonagh and Richard Greer.  Along with the assistance of Walter Fiedler, who ultimately served as the first adviser, the Youth Corps was officially founded in 1979.  Over the next few decades, the organization continued to mature through many defining moments in Nanuet Ambulance Corps. history.

The ability for the Youth Corps to survive the changes occurring within the ambulance corps was ultimately the result of the outstanding leadership of its dedicated members and advisers.   Under the guidance of Matt and Liz Donnelly, the organization began to motivate youth members to continue to volunteer as EMTs upon turning 18.  They believed that these members represented the future of Nanuet Ambulance and that the success of the agency depended on their commitment to volunteer service.  Ultimately, many of the youth corps. from this time would later hold senior leadership positions and be honored as life members of Nanuet Ambulance for their significant commitment and service.

During 1990s and through today, the Youth Corps has continued to benefit from the passion, leadership and experience that senior advisers pass along to the young members.  Over the past 12 years, former advisers Anthony Savarese and Diana Korabel provided outstanding leadership for the young members while they further developed the organization into what it is today.   Certainly, their dedication and desire to see the Youth Corps succeed is a result of their own positive experience as youth members of Nanuet Ambulance.

Today, the organization is advised by senior members Erich Rechenberger Jr and Eric Roemish, who joined Nanuet Ambulance first as members of the Youth Corps.   It is without a doubt that volunteering as a youth member instills a great deal of pride in service that encourages many members to continue to volunteer for Nanuet Ambulance Corps.

Who We Are

The Nanuet Community Ambulance Youth Corps is currently made up of 40 members between the ages of 14 and 18 years old.  These members represent outstanding leaders in the community who represent an unwavering commitment to volunteer service.

Each member receives extensive training in American Heart Association Blood Bourne Pathogens Awareness and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Healthcare Provider.  Additionally, youth members receive ongoing training in basic first aid skills and have the opportunity to earn the New York State Certified First Responder certification and eventually the New York State Emergency Medical Technician-Basic certification.

Once the member is trained at the high standards of Nanuet Ambulance Corps, they serve as observational members on the primary response ambulance crew.  This crew is dispatched to 911 medical emergencies in the Nanuet Ambulance response area.  During these shifts, youth members will witness and often assist in providing lifesaving emergency medical care to local residents.

Requirements to Join

Age Requirement:  Must be 14 years old to be a social member and between 15 and 18 years old to be a riding member.  We ask that if you will be turning 18 in less than six months to please consider joining the Nanuet Ambulance senior Corps.

We also ask that members possess a true desire to be a volunteer member of an emergency response service.  While we understand that volunteer service hours are important for high school service requirements, our organization receives a high volume of applicants and only has riding times available to those who wish to maintain a commitment to the ambulance corps.

For the complete Standards of Conduct Agreement/Membership Requirements, please see the attached document.

Requirements as a Member

As a member, you must attend the general membership meeting held during the first Sunday of each month.  In addition, you must be able to ride a minimum of 12 hours a month.

Finally, we ask that each member holds a passion for volunteer service, a commitment to learning, a desire to lead, and an excitement to help those when they need it most.
