Our New Building
Nanuet Community Ambulance housed itself at 202 South Main Street for almost 70 years. For almost a decade, this building was cramped and not suited logistically for an ambulance company in operation in today's day in age. For starters, 202 South Main Street was designed for Cadillac-style ambulances, and at the time it was built, the call volume was significantly less. New standards and protocols were developed over the decades, and more and more equipment was necessary.
As equipment progressed and additions were made to what was required to properly stock an ambulance to New York State's Department of Health Standards, storage space dwindled to almost none. To store uniforms, Nanuet Community Ambulance had to lease a storage garage. Uniforms were chosen to be stored outside the location, because emergency equipment for calls had to be readily accessible to restock the rigs. Spare parts also needed a place, such as batteries for defibrillators, extra oxygen tanks, breathing masks, and immobilization supplies. A locked cabinet was also becoming necessary as Nanuet Community Ambulance was becoming certified to carry medications for allergic reactions and difficulty breathing - which required additional space.
Vehicles changed over the years as well, to accomodate such equipment. From Cadillac-style to box-style to fit the most equipment to be ever-ready. The ambulance bays had comfortably fit two Cadillac Ambulances in it's hayday. As time progressed, Nanuet switched vehicles to the common box-style rig to have space for all of our equipment. These rigs allowed only about 3 inches of clearance on either side of the rig to access the garage doors. As the call volume also increased, Nanuet acquired more rigs, with not enough room to park them. A rig had to be parked out in the alley, sometimes long-term, being exposed to all of the elements, causing deterioration long before it was due.
Additional crews also had to be staffed to ensure calls were adequately answered. This required moving the "crew room" to the meeting room upstairs. Due to this, there was no longer a proper area to hold meetings or training sessions. Members were forced to attend training sessions in the ambulance bays, sometimes being cold throughout the session - with the ambulances parked on the street.
Finally, in the early 2000s, Nanuet Community Ambulance purchased our new building at 255 South Middletown Road. with new building standards for public places, certain construction had to be implemented, and the building had to be practically gutted to make it suitable for an ambulance corps. An addition had to be built to house the rigs. Due to new regulations, special exhaust elimination systems had to be placed in the bay to protect our members, we had to install in-house decontamination for crews' clothing, and special fire suppression systems had to be placed in the kitchen. This is just SOME of the required codes Nanuet Community Ambulance had to abide by.
After what seemed like an eternity, we moved into our new building in the Autumn of 2010. We now have a funtioning kitchen to cook for ourselves, a crew room to study, watch tv, or relax between calls, bunk rooms for overnight crews, room for all of our storage on-site, a meeting/training room, and offices for the Board of Directors and Line Officers.
Thank you to all of those members and town officials who helped Nanuet Community Ambulance with our new home!
